NLP Presuppositions

NLP treats presuppositions not as a technique, but as a naturally occurring language phenomenon that you can use for more effective communication.

When it comes to communication, there is a small portion that is physically said, and a whole world of hidden meanings that go unsaid. There are many who communicate ineffectively due to the fact that they don’t realize what they are leaving unsaid, or do not pick up on what other people are leaving unsaid in their conversations.

NLP Presuppositions are a way to decipher the preconceived ideas of a conversation before it happens. If you are asking the wrong questions, or making incorrect assumptions you will find out once you learn this technique. Once you have that figured out, you will be able to offer yourself and others the opportunity to see the conversation from a different angle and therefore reverse it, if need be.

For example, in my life I tend to allow myself to approach social situations negatively because I assume that due to my rough past, I come off as un-relatable. I judge myself harshly, and assume that others do too. But if I were to reverse this assumption, it would benefit me because I would be then telling myself that it’s BECAUSE of my rough past that I am, in fact, relatable. I have been through things and am admittedly imperfect, which puts others at ease because they are also imperfect and have made mistakes.

This simple change in outlook has completely flip-flopped my entire view of being social, and made me much more comfortable in my own skin. I feel that I can meet new people, and attend social events with a sense of calmness and ease that I never thought possible.

If you know someone who has a hard time communicating due to incorrect Presuppositions being made, you will undoubtedly be able to help them to communicate more clearly, and understand other’s much more easily using this technique.
